Private View for Art History Festival

  • Friday 9th October 2026, 17:30-19:30

The Art History Festival 2026 celebrates the full spectrum of art history in all its richness, across the histories of art, architecture and design. As part of this programme, The Fan Museum invites you to a private view of our new exhibition opening 6th October, Swaying in the Wind – Frédérick Gay: A Contemporary French Fan Maker. The history of the hand fan as an art object spans cultures and civilizations. Art movements can be traced through the development of styles, techniques, and materials. From Chinese ink painting to French impressionism, fans have been a vessel for expressing artistry for thousands of years. Frédérick Gay’s unique position as a master fan maker invigorates the art form through the partnership of traditional craft, fashion, and contemporary art practice. The private view will take place in our Grade II* Listed Early Georgian townhouse and includes a curator-led tour of the exhibition with an opportunity to meet the artist.
